21st General Council: Adapting to the new normal

Keywords : THE TRADE UNION BATTLE AGAINST COVID-19 Reports

The 21st meeting of the General Council of ITUC-Africa was held virtually on 30 September and 1 October 2020, a particular context due to the health crisis of Covid-19.

For two days, about 50 trade union leaders who are members of the general council of ITUC-Africa with representatives of sub-regional organizations and of the regional women committee had discussed important issues relating to the functioning of ITUC-Africa like activities and financial reports, ITUC-Africa 2020-2023 strategic plan. Issues relating to the recomposition of the Youth Committee and the role of the Assistant Secretaries-General and new affiliations requests were also discussed among others.

Some decisions resulting from the meeting that we can highlight are:
 The organization of a virtual regional youth conference where young people can meet and set up a new youth committee for a four-year term
 Call for more solidarity action by trade union organizations for workers in Sudan, Ethiopia and wherever necessary.
 The next meeting of the General Council of the ITUC-Africa will be held in September 2021.

It should be noted that the General Council is the highest authority of the Regional Organization between Congresses. In accordance with the current statutes, "it is responsible for directing the activities of the Regional Organization and implementing the decisions and resolutions of the Congress."
