The National Youth Council (NYC) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana marked the 2018 International Youth Day under the Theme: *“Safe Spaces for Youth”.

The importance of safe spaces is critical if the Youth can participate meaningfully in the discourse that surrounds the decision making process at the home, workplace and national governance. Safe spaces within communities are also critical for the peaceful development of the faculties of young persons, especially, those that are marginalized and vulnerable.

Further on this occasion, the attention of the nation is being drawn on the importance of working together towards creating safe spaces that protects young persons from the lure of drug and substance abuse. This requires the assiduous efforts of appropriate national authorities responsible for regulation and enforcement of legislations on the matter. Since the efforts of young persons in this matter cannot be underestimated, the occasion was used to call on the Youth of Ghana to arise for the country and their future by pledging themselves to a substance and drug abuse free lifestyle. It is also critical that institutional support is provided to help rehabilitate those who have unfortunately found themselves in a lifestyle of drug and substance abuse.
