Ongoing heavy rains and flooding in Botswana : African workers express their solidarity to the Government and People of Botswana

We are deeply saddened by the hardships caused by these unprecedented rains, which have disrupted trade and essential services and severely impacted countless families’ lives. We acknowledge the profound challenges communities face in affected regions as they contend with the loss of livestock, damage to homes, and the broader socio-economic implications of this natural disaster.

At this difficult time, ITUC-Africa stands with the government and people of Botswana and its leadership in their efforts to provide immediate relief and implement measures to mitigate the impact of these floods. We urge the populace to play down the blame game. Instead, everyone and relevant institutions must be mobilised to make tangible efforts to assist people and communities affected by the folds. We also call on the government to ensure it genuinely positions itself to learn from this natural disaster and to review and update its disaster prevention, mitigation and management playbook to handle future occurrences better.

We also call on the international community, neighbouring countries, and humanitarian organisations to extend their full support in aiding Botswana’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

As the world continues to witness the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, this situation underscores the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing climate change and strengthening disaster preparedness, particularly for vulnerable regions.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected communities and all those working tirelessly to restore normalcy and provide much-needed assistance. May Botswana’s enduring spirit of unity and resilience guide the nation through these challenging times.

Akhator Joel Odigie

A trade union focus on the SDGs - Botswana

Trade unions in Botswana criticise the fact that dialogue with social partners is only limited to the country’s Decent Work Programme. Instead, unions want a more structured approach to consultation across all ministries responsible for policies and programmes connected to SDG implementation.
