Press statement on the Occasion of the Global Week of Action for Swaziland: ITUC
and ITUC-Africa solidarity with working men and women and citizens of Swaziland in
their legitimate demand for true multiparty democracy - 6 September, 2012,
Johannesburg, South Africa
African trade unions and other civil society organisations have led international protests against Swaziland’s rulers on 6 September, the country’s independence day.
Dear M. Dlamini Zuma,
I am writing to you on the occasion of the upcoming celebration of Independence Day
in Swaziland. On 6 September, this AU member state will commemorate its
independence from British rule, which it obtained in 1968.
Reports from Swaziland indicate that the levels of mobilisation inside Swaziland this year have reached unprecedented levels. Marches in rural and urban communities have been very well attended, and the reaction of local people has been very supportive.
The Swaziland Democracy Campaign (SDC) will be holding a public demonstration outside the offices of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) tomorrow, Friday 09 September 2011, 57 Ntemi Piliso Street, Johannesburg.
