Unity is strength. Two hundred and sixty-twelve representatives of civil society, trade unions, women’s organizations and young people met a year earlier, precisely on 23 and 24 August 2016 in Arusha, Tanzania, to reflect on the future of our continent.

From the observation that: Africa is a rich continent that has been impoverished by colonialism, slavery and new forms of economic injustice; that Africans possess a diversified, rich and powerful heritage and that it is important to heal ourselves, to repair the damage caused by neoliberalism to our humanity and our environment, this meeting gave birth to a pan-African movement called AFRICANS RISING.

It should be noted that the Africans rising movement is a catalyst that is intended to be a niche of knowledge sharing on the burning issues of the hour, those of awakening consciousness, of changing mindsets to lay the foundations for a real economic and sustainable impetus.

This movement was, officially, launched on the island of Gorée in Senegal on 25 May 2017. Different activities took place with reference to the date of May 25 which to commemorate Africa day and that of its liberation. The activities included gathering in groups, wearing red cloths, read the KILIMANDJARO declaration, raise demands and stand as one man for a new Africa with the slogan "We are a united Africa, we are the Africans who stand up for justice, peace and dignity".

The staff of ITUC-Africa and that of affiliated national organisations joined their voices to other African civil society organizations to cry out their willingness to see a more just and peaceful Africa in which the workers are living decently.
