The exceptional mobilisation of workers across the public, parapublic and private sectors demonstrates the strength, unity and maturity of Senegal’s trade union movement. It is a powerful affirmation that workers remain committed to defending decent work, social justice, democratic participation and meaningful social dialogue. We commend the discipline and peaceful conduct of workers who exercised their legitimate trade union rights in demanding that their voices be heard.

ITUC-Africa notes the overwhelming participation reported across the country as a clear indication that the concerns raised by workers resonate widely. Such an expression of collective action should not be viewed as confrontation, but as a democratic call for engagement. Governments have a responsibility to listen when workers speak with such unity and conviction.

We therefore call upon the Government of Senegal to respond to this mobilisation by opening sincere, constructive and good-faith negotiations with the FSDT. Beyond acknowledging the workers’ demands, concrete action is now required to address the issues raised through genuine social dialogue and respect for existing commitments. Sustainable development and social stability can only be achieved when governments and social partners work together in mutual trust and respect.

ITUC-Africa further calls upon governments across Africa to reaffirm their commitment to social dialogue as the primary mechanism for resolving labour disputes. Unilateral decisions that affect workers’ livelihoods undermine trust and weaken the foundations of democratic governance.

Respect for freedom of association, collective bargaining and social dialogue remains essential to building inclusive and resilient economies.
