ITUC-Africa is a pan-African trade union organisation with 16 million declared members and 103 affiliated trade union centres in 51 African countries, headquartered in Lome, Togo. ITUC-Africa was founded in 2007 following the merger of two African trade union organisations.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by the General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, and the General Director of the IISH, Henk Wals.

The collections of ITUC-Africa pre-date the year of the founding of ITUC-Africa and include original documents, grey material, publications, etc. of previous umbrella and regional trade union organisations. With this agreement ITUC-Africa and the IISH hope to establish a long term collaboration in order to preserve, digitise and make accessible these unique archives, immensely important for African social and labour history and for global labour history more generally.

Instrumental contributors to the development and implementation of this partnership were: Hilma Mote, Executive Director of the Research Department of ITUC-Africa, Marien van der Heijden, Stefano Bellucci and Andreas Admasie, from the Collection Development Department of the IISH.

The IISH already serves as repository for ITUC-International (ICFTU Archives) and the ITUC Asia-Pacific branch organization.
