We salute the UGTT and Tunisian workers for remaining a courageous and constructive voice for freedom, justice and meaningful change. Their continued readiness to contribute ideas and solutions reflects the important role of trade unions in national development.

ITUC-Africa shares the UGTT’s concern over the worsening economic and social conditions in Tunisia. Rising living costs, declining purchasing power, unemployment and the deterioration of essential public services are placing an increasingly heavy burden on workers and their families. Workers and public employees must not be blamed for policy choices they did not make.

WE are excited that the UGTT has reiterated its commitment to be part of the solution to the crisis in Tunisia, including readiness to work with all stakeholders in the Tunisian state, especially the government, civil society organisations and other progressive allies. Independent trade unions are not adversaries of the State. They are democratic institutions and indispensable partners in building fair, stable and inclusive societies. This resolve by the UGTT is the right way to go, and we commend this resolve and stand ready to support it in this effort.

ITUC-Africa calls upon the Tunisian authorities to engage the UGTT and other national stakeholders in genuine and good-faith dialogue. Tunisia’s challenges require openness to different ideas, shared responsibility and practical solutions that protect workers’ rights, strengthen public services and restore public confidence.

We encourage the UGTT and Tunisian workers to remain steadfast in their defence of freedom, social justice, decent work and democratic participation. ITUC-Africa stands firmly with them in this struggle.
