Background:
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement is a continental trade pact that promises to expand and improve intra-African trade which has long eluded the continent. The pact, which really kicked off in 2022, is structured around National Implementing Committees and working groups based on the negotiated AfCFTA protocols. While the NIC is a critical provision to influence trade policy at the national level, participation by trade unions on this platform is nearly absent. The ITUC-Africa and SASK project seeks to fill this gap by facilitating trade union participation to address this gap. The Africa Labour Research and Education Institute (ALREI) of the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa), has conducted a comprehensive research study on the awareness, knowledge, and challenges related to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) among African workers. This study was partly sponsored by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland through the Trade Union Solidarity Centre of Finland SASK. To effectively communicate the findings and implications of this research, ALREI seeks to produce an engaging and informative video that will present the key outcomes and recommendations of the study.
