The Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers (UNICOF) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana held its Founding Youth Conference on Thursday, 20th July, 2017 at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
The theme for the maiden youth conference which brought together one hundred and fifty young workers from across the ten regions of Ghana was “the role of the youth in re-organizing and repositioning the union”.
In attendance were the National leadership of the Union, the National Youth Leadership and Ashanti Regional Youth Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Ghana.
The youth conference which preceded the Third Quadrennial Conference of the National Union (UNICOF) was aimed at :
The participants were taken through the history and struggles of the Union, the structures of the union and strategic direction of the Union by the Acting General Secretary of the Union, Brother John Senanu Amegashie.
Participants with guidance from the National leadership of the Trades Union Congress, Ghana, also discussed a proposed Youth Structure and a constitutional provision for onwards submission to the main conference.
Participants also agreed to nominate interim youth representatives from the regions to act as the fulcrum of all youth activities in the regions until the youth structures are formalized. In all thirty three representatives from eleven regions (including Tema) were selected.
The Youth Conference ended with a drafting of a Resolution which was submitted to the Resolutions Committee of the Third Quadrennial Conference, to be presented at the plenary of the main conference.
