AFRICAN REGIONAL ORGANISATION OF THE
INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION Creating a better world for workers in Africa and beyond

The boss of the National Union of Gambian carriers (Gambia National Transport Control Association), Sheriff Dibba, died Sunday in his cell in Banjul sinister prison.

In early February, the president of Gambia had simply dissolved the Gambia National Transport Control (the National Union of carriers of the Gambia).

The decision was read on national television Gambia and members of dissolved union were not only prohibited from any form of association, but also sent to prison. Yahya Jammeh finally used this radical option after he tried negotiations.

The union was demanding lower fuel prices. He wanted that requirement to be dropped but unionists launched an awareness campaign before a strike that disrupted the transport sector.

Having made a meager decline in the price of fuel, Yaya Jammeh finally released the whip.

The media revealed that Sheriff Dibba was already very bad shape at the time of transfer by the "National intelligence agency" (Nia) to this prison. The NIA is a compulsory step for those accused to challenge the authority of President Yahya Jammeh and is also reputed for having several special methods to extract confessions from the unfortunate ones who find themselves in interrogation rooms.

This was the case of Dibba whose health conditions have deteriorated in the Mile Two Prison, where he was confined after being accused a few weeks earlier of having committed economic crimes. An accusation that came along with the dissolution of his union and the publication of a new decree announcing that the collection of daily contributions among drivers, known as the "mandate" is now an economic crime. It is on that basis that he was sent to prison where he died Sunday at 11 o’clock. , The panicked prison officials transferred the body to the Bakau health center while trying to figure out what to do. The rumor of the death of Sheriff Dibba was circulating and the authorities had no option than to announce the sad news to his family in the evening, about 19 hours GMT.
