AFRICAN REGIONAL ORGANISATION OF THE
INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION Creating a better world for workers in Africa and beyond

ITUC-Africa has learnt with disquiet about the break in at the offices of the National Organisation of Trade Unions of Uganda (NOTU) by unknown persons who made away with computers and documents.

While it is not evident who the perpetrators of this vile act may have been, the choice of items they took away suggests that these were no ordinary thieves but elements who must have been mainly after information from or about NOTU.

We believe that any person or entity in need of information from or about NOTU in good faith can readily approach the union directly for such information.
The fact that they chose this illegal method of burglary shows their sinister motives and the fact that they may be after information which the union considers private.

ITUC-Africa condemns this assault on NOTU and urges the police as a legitimate arm of state whose duty is to safeguard law and order to investigate this crime against the trade union. Credible investigations by the police which yield results can help to prevent the growth with impunity of this phenomenon of rogues who take partisan action on behalf of power blocs and masquerade as acting for the state.

ITUC-Africa uses this opportunity to salute our comrades in NOTU and we urge them to stand firm and refuse to be cowed by faceless predators who cannot come to NOTU through the front door.
