On the 27th of May, the 110th Session of the International Labour Conference was opened in Geneva. At this session, governments, workers’ and employers’ representatives from 187 ILO member States will be discussing matters relating to the world of work.

The ILC is one of the ILO’s statutory bodies and functions and has a solemn and important character, as it contributes to improving the governance of labour relations through the collaboration of its tripartite constituents (social partners), which include governments, employers and trade unions.

As a matter of fact, the ILC, as an event under the ILO Constitution, has a mandate to work towards ensuring that rights in the world of work are not undermined in the pursuit of productivity. This is a mechanism and a space for standard setting that workers must effectively utilize.

Until the 11th of June, governments, workers’ and employers’ representatives will be discussing issues pertaining to occupational safety and health, apprenticeships, and the social and solidarity economy. In addition, the Conference will be setting priorities and developing the budget of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the global level.

It is worth noting that the ILO brings together governments, employers and workers’ representatives from 187 Member States for the purposes of setting international standards, developing policies and designing programmes to promote decent work for all men and women in the world.
